HISTORY OF THE PENNSYLVANIA LOTTERY

Pennsylvania has run a lottery since 1972, with the earnings going to support senior citizen initiatives.

In December 2011, the US Department of Justice issued a legal interpretation of the Wire Act, determining that it solely related to sports betting. As a result, online lottery sales became possible.

In October 2017, Pennsylvania lawmakers enacted a comprehensive gambling expansion bill that includes the approval of online lottery sales. On June 1, 2018, the Pennsylvania iLottery made its debut.

The Pennsylvania iLottery funds initiatives for the elderly as well. In the fiscal year 2018-19, Pennsylvania Lottery earnings produced more than $1.14 billion for senior programming.

Lottery sales provide for 78 percent of the Pennsylvania Department of Aging’s funding. The Pennsylvania Lottery fully funds programs such as shared and free-ride services for seniors, while the Office of Long-Term Living receives 4% of its income from the lottery.

The Pennsylvania Lottery is currently overseen by the Gaming Oversight Committee of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. This group is also in charge of online lottery sales.
